Earlene Duvall A Special Lady

Once in a while I get the urge to find someone from my past that I have not been in touch with in some time.  Sometimes it is a strong pull to find them, sometimes just a thought that shows up many times within a few days.  Most often than not, I find that they have passed away.  Such is the doorway for this blog entry.   I have traveled many places playing music, roughly 30 years of my life. Along the way I have met many wonderful individuals.  Some of those people stick in your mind the rest of your life.  This lady was one of those.   I met her in the fall of 1989 in the middle of Montana.   We played a little hole in the wall place there with a mixture of types of people.  Earlene was one of those people.   She sat by herself which is one of the reasons I went over to her table on my break.  Not because I felt sorry for a loner lol… no no.  She was dancing whenever she was asked, she pretty much knew everyone there, it was not loneliness that drew me to her, it was her smile.  She was soft spoken, very much a lady who was not afraid to laugh.  First impression was she was a true lady.  Educated, clever, soft spoken, wise, kind & very interested in the arts of any kind.  We got to talking, she loved the band.  She loved music & most of all loved to dance.  She would come out at least once a week if not more, not on a weekend so much but the middle of the week when it was less crowded. I knew she was a little older than myself, but age was never something we talked about, she laughed when it came up actually.  She always said.. I’m OLDER than you, but no number came out with that statement.  It was a mute point.  We knew she had lived a rich life up to the point where we entered it.   She asked me if we would like to come out to her little cabin the next day so we could experience the mountains of Montana first hand instead of looking out the window.  We said yes, made that date & showed up the next day.
She lived in the Judith Mountains around Lewistown.  It was a little bit of a drive & the closer you got to her place the more you drove back in time, more of a feeling than a reality.
She lived by herself in a cabin she had built. As I recall it was sort of an A frame cabin with a big porch.  Very charming with no phone, no cable, no modern day intrusions.  Oh she had indoor plumbing and electricity but that was about all for modern creature comfort luxury.
It was a two story’s.  The minute you walked in it smelled of cookies & books.  The main floor had the kitchen & a small seating space.  A spiral stairs was just to the left of the front door that lead up to the second floor.   There were two main rooms up there, the first as you came up the stairs had books lining the walls like a library.  That was the decore plus the baby grand in the middle of the room.  The room was not very large so the piano was very dominant… piano & books.   Her bedroom was towards the back of the house on that upper floor.  The view was spectacular thru the windows.  She spend many hours there playing her piano, reading with no distractions.  I do not ever think she tired of this.  It was a quiet time in her life.   She had already been a wife, mother, sibling, business woman etc etc.  That was all past except for the mother part, you never stop being that.   Mind you that age thing again, she looked like maybe MAYBE 10 years older than me at the time.  I did the math only to find out she was 57 years when I met her, I was 28.   She did not look her age by a long shot!  She still had dreams that not only would she dream, but she would accomplish before long.  She wanted to share her little paradise with interesting people & bring her adult children into a business that she wanted to share with them.   She wanted to turn her little cabin into a bed & breakfast.   She not only did that… but her family did come be apart of it. I have no idea of the status now with the family, I did not know them personally only thru their mother.  She wanted it to be something she could leave to them, her children & grand children.    She did it!  It was called the Duvall Inn, she built on and made it bigger, beautiful & a perfect getaway.  People came from all over the world. She had made that dream she shared with us, come true.
We saw her over the next decade since our first meeting time & time again.  She would dance, we would go out to her house for dinner with band members that changed over & over thru the years.  There is way more to the story here however I shall keep it private for the lady.  I do not know if he ever shared some things with her family.  Perhaps she shared things with her daughter, perhaps not.  I will say, with respect to the lady who we grew to know & love, that she never stopped loving, she never stopped thinking smart. She never let her heart get in the way of what she thought was right & she never stopped being kind, even if it meant her heart was gonna have a scar that was not visible. I believe that there was way more to her than any of us knew.   She was a special woman to me/us.  She lived a very full life with many chapters in it, just like her beloved books.
The last time I talked to her, I had found her after a long time of no contact.  I found a way to contact her (that was never easy).   We got on the phone,  I had a reason to call other than catching up.  One of my band members had passed away & they had been close.   She said she sort of knew already… she felt it.   There  been no contact there for years, yet… she felt it.  We caught up on many things, laughed a bit, remembered things together shared a few more precious moments.    She told me about the Inn, & all the changes that had happened since we were last there.  She told me she was still working there & enjoying it but it was getting to the point where she was more tired than she used to be at the end of the day.   I asked her if there was anyone in her life romantically after all this time… she laughed and said… well there is this one gentleman from Europe who had been a guest several times that had asked her to go on a trip with him.  I said..”well are you gonna?? Why not? Sounds wonderful”…  she laughed harder & said.. Carrie, I am 79 years old…    This was the first time I had known the exact number of her age…  it dumbfounded me.  She was not just 10 years old than me lol… she was almost 30 years my senior.   She never showed it.  It was not because she acted like a kid, not at all.   She hid her age without trying because she was always…  a lady.   She didn’t act like a lady, she was one.  No age for class & elegance.
I had been thinking about my old friend off and on… that pull again.  I dreaded it but I went to the search engines & typed in her name with the obit at the end of it.  Sure enough, there it was in front of me.    The lady had passed away in July of 2017.   She lived to be 85 years old.  I know, her life was full.  I am sad at the news yet happy for her in so many ways.  So blessed to have known her, there was none quite like her.  She was unique, special & will always have a place in my thoughts & heart.   Earlene, we love you.  Rest in Peace my lovely lady friend.

Her Obit from her daughter.

Earlene Ann Duvall passed away on July 3, 2017 in Lewistown, Montana.
She was born to Earl and Sylvia Duvall on Oct. 19, 1932 in Geraldine, where she was raised along with her siblings on the family farm.
Mom attended high school with the Geraldine class of 1950. She loved to share stories about the fun she had playing basketball with her teammates.
Earlene married Howard Ludeman on Oct. 28, 1949. They raised their family while farming and ranching in Graceville, Montana. Earlene was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.
Mom had a passion for the great outdoors, especially riding horseback with her family in the Missouri River Breaks. She also enjoyed card games (pinochle was a favorite), dancing the waltz and jitterbug, teaching Sunday school and singing as a member of the Geraldine Methodist Church choir.
We have fond memories of mom’s incredible voice as she sang and played the piano most evenings, after a long hard day of work on the ranch. Eating mom’s home cooked meals was a delight to many who “happened” to drop in around meal times. Her maple bars were second to none.
Mom’s dedicated volunteer works included Hospice, the Performing Arts Center, Wesley Center and caring for foster children, to name a few.
Mom lived just outside of Lewistown, up Lime Kiln Canyon, for over 40 years. She loved to hike in the Judith Mountains and built a home there, and eventually built the Duvall Inn. It was a way of life she loved to share with others.
Earlene was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister Carol, sister Betty McManaman, brother Earl, sister-in-law Kay Duvall and great-grandson Austin Michael.
She is survived by her children Randy (Sandi) Ludeman of Geraldine; Darcy (Curt) Black of St. Charles, Missouri; Darla (John) Goleash; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brothers Joe Ed (Nita) Duvall and Lenny (Kay) Duvall; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The fruit of the spirit, you can tell a tree by the fruit it gives.  You can also tell much about a person from the things they believe in.
Labels, titles, supporting and convictions. Ahh where to begin.  It seems that today more than ever, people are claiming things and we are then supposed to identify their character or what they believe in by their t-shirt or name tag. Fair enough, we know what you would like to represent or think you belong with.   Let’s step back a moment shall we…   What if you are mistaken?  What if, what you thought you believed in no longer represents the title you have chosen to identify with? What if somewhere along the lines it changed and you did not get the memo? What if you have been fooled to the point of staying in the fold because you don’t want to think the worst and that perhaps you no longer belong there, yeah…  shouldn’t or can’t wear that t-shirt of representation anymore because you had a thought of your own that did not match the direction the title of representation you chose… perhaps you woke up, or they changed on you and you didn’t notice, or they crept in things that was nothing like you signed up for.  It happens more than you know.
How many people have bought something because it looks good, but never read the manual? Then when the time comes to say YES wonderful I know all about it and still like it… they have no idea of all the facts. They did not do their homework.  New things, new products come out all the time; have you read the fine print?
Politics and religion… have you read the fine print?   What does your faith or your party actually represents… and just what do you THINK it represents.  Do you really belong there anymore or do you need to become head honcho of the next big event to show just how loyal you are because you understand what it means to wear that title.    Most sheeple just follow along and do what their parents did, or what their surroundings dictate to do.  How many people actually crack the book open, read the owner’s manuals or research the history of the party you are registered under?   I bet not many of you.   If you had to debate for the things you believe in with actual facts, how good would you represent what you think you are in life? Things are not the same as they were; many changes have been slipped in under your nose.  Gullible happens when brainwash is allowed and vice versa.
I urge you all to do a reset button on yourself.  Start over to make sure you know who you are.  In this day and age of self improvement, why not clean house on those things in your brain and actions that are really not you at all.   You can answer the easy ones,   paper or plastic… ford or Chevy, Pepsi or coke, but how about the why’s.  Can you defend what you believe in with more than your opinion?  What are the facts?  Do you look at more than what you think to be the truth? Do you look outside the box for answers?   If you don’t, it could be, just maybe… there is wool over your eyes on some things. If you found that to be true… wouldn’t you feel used, dumbfounded, shocked, violated in a way, and guilty of false representing yourself.   Opinions are personal and should be given only when asked for. Facts and knowledge there is not enough of and should be handled with care from more than one source.
It does seem that at this point in time a reputation does not mean what it used to mean.  To find reputable new sources or reputable people, it is not that easy.  I urge you all to do a double take on what you think you represent or want from your life, your faith, your party, your family, your wordrobe…   you will be labeled no matter what you do. Don’t you want to be respected for what you actually believe in, as opposed to something you didn’t read before you signed up for?
The fruit of the spirit, you can tell a tree by the fruit it gives.  You can also tell much about a person from the things they believe in.   Methinks it is time for a personal fact check for many people. Yeah, it is only an opinion, nobody asked me, but then again you are the one reading this, you didn’t have to, unless, you wanted my opinion.........

Death of a House

This is not an accident; no physical harm came to anyone. This happened yesterday, it was a planned burn. In those ashes are the memories of a family that touched every corner of the house that was. For me, this was the house where I spent a week or two every summer with my second cousin Paula. Every Christmas day with my parents and my great grandpa, grandpa and my mom's aunt and uncle and family. All the memories are still there like it was yesterday but now the house is gone, no more hearing the laughter or smelling the smells that my aunt Ruth made with tender love, the cabinets for the kitchen and dining room that were made by hand by my uncle Gordon are in those ashes, the fingerprints on that wood still belonged to the people that loved in that house. The purple bedroom, the attic door the narrow staircase to the two rooms upstairs that many hours were spent with me and my cousin, the living room where family pictures were taken, so many in those pictures are gone now. I can hear American Band Stand on the TV with the aluminum foil on the rabbit ears, getting ready to go to the little church in Badger for this or that. The crickets, the basement, the kitchen was the heart of the house, so many memories flooded back into my thoughts that I had not thought of in years. The burn and the knowledge of it brought them all back.
...have you ever been going down a flight of stairs and felt like you were missing the next step as if it is not there and panic just a little bit where your heart gets an imaginary push to the back of your chest... going to sleep knowing that this home, one of the icons in my childhood is gone, there are not many of those icons left, and it hits like many members of my family just died again. So many good memories there. I know one can't go back in time and even if we visit it, the door to the past is not open to us. The part that stings a bit more is the fact that there will be no new memories there, the door is really gone. The changes to this place have an impact on me, I cannot imagine how my cousins Sue and Paula feel and the emotions are similar to another death in the family. Closure... does not always give a good feeling. It is however an emotional one. Maybe, just maybe now that it is gone from this earth, it can be in another place with everyone who lived and loved there, still sitting at the table. A place for them to gather together and wait for us to join them. Goodbye old house...I will see you in my dreams.

Racist, Prejudice.

Racist, Prejudice.
We have many problems in this country.  One of them is the very words we speak. It is very important what comes out of your mouth. Make sure you know what it is that you are actually saying when you speak.  These days the word racist is thrown around like a feather in the wind by people who don’t even know what it actually means.  My world is full of a mixture of different kinds and colors of people, and only one race, the human race.  I treasure it in this life of mine.  I do not judge people by the color of their skin but by the content of their hearts.   The problem with today’s society is not racism even though that word is thrown around every day all the time.  The problem is prejudice.  People really NEED to know the difference.  If you do not recognize a problem you will not know where to start to begin to fix it.
Racism is when you hate a person because of his or her race.  We all belong to ONE RACE, The Human race. Prejudice is when you judge a person by their color, sex or whatever else you judge them for before you even know the facts.   Prejudice comes from two words, pre and judice to… prejudge. An unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. We definitely do have some racist people out there but there really are not that many.  We have a planet of wonderful people all different kinds of Asian, Black, Indian, White, & many combinations.  There are a few that are racist. It is unfortunate that most EVERY person has SOME prejudice.  The best thing to do to fix it is, admit it and learn to deal with it.  If you are making judgments on people and you have not even met, that is the problem.
For instance, if you vote against someone because of their color, it is prejudice.  If you vote FOR someone because of their color… it is prejudice.  OR if you vote for or against or for someone because of his or her gender, that is prejudice.  It does not matter if the person is red, yellow, black, white, male or female.  It matters on whether or not that person can lead our country.  We are all one race, the human race.  Making it into a color code for people to fight over is the most stupid hateful thing ever.
So please, next time you think you have a need to “call someone out” and call them a name like racist… learn what it means and stop being a prejudice person, you do not know them.   THINK before you speak.  People disagree all the time, it does not make them racist or prejudice just because they do not agree with you.  Open your eyes a little further.   I may not like sushi… I am not a racist because of it.   Please stop being stupid and start fixing your behavior towards others.  You do not live on this planet alone.
Everyone is accountable for the words they speak.  Stop being so offended at others who are not aware of the value of their words.  Stop being offended about how people say things, they obviously do not understand.  Stop letting yourself be baited by ignorance and antagonists.  Keep your nose on your own face, watch your mouth and unless you can make a situation better, just keep it to yourself.  Learn the meaning of a word before you throw it at someone especially with an intention of anger.  The reason for this post is to maybe just maybe make some people think twice and make it better.

Cliff

He was someone you didn't need to see every day, he would not have wanted to. He loved his dogs more than people. He lost the love of his life after 20 years with her. They had a daughter and she gave him grandaughters. He never remarried, didn't date anyone except to go dancing. He did many things in his life. He traveled, he was in the war and saw history made that we only read about. He always looked two days older than dirt. He could clean up and you could take him to town tho. He was a night club owner in the 30's 40's and 50's. He knew every musician that ever walked in a five state area. Most of them he kept alive by hiring them in rotation. He owned a place called "The Dog House"... it was a road house outside of the city limits on a lake shore. He loved to dance, country, old time, ballroom you name it. He had a dog sled team and always dreamed of going to enter the Ididarod up in Alaska, but when he talked about that he was already in his 70's. He died at the age of 93. He was my grandmothers cousin. They used to drink together.. and I joined that to make it a trio. He lived in a house built into a hill that he made himself. Room enough for him and a dog. I lived just below him on the lake for six years. Every other day or so we would get together and talk. He had sold me the property on the lake front that was the parking area for his old night club. Many stories from him of my family.. the old ones that he knew and let me know thru him. He said I had the wild hair of my Aunt Evelyn, he didn't elaborate much on that one, only that you never knew what to expect out of her and everyone was sort of afraid of her until she laughed. He said it gave him the creeps cause.. she and I have the same laugh. Many hours spent with Cliff... he seemed as if he was way older than he was, but you could never put a number on it. A group of us went out to breakfast after the bars closed one night. Cliff was out and about to, keeping in mind he is about 73 at this time.... a smart mouthed drunken bastard said something nasty to a lady that Cliff had been out dancing with.... it was outside in front of the restaurant. Before we knew it, we saw Cliff grab the smart ass, who was in his 20's nailed him to the hood of a car by the scruff of his neck and tell him to mind his manners or the next thing out of his smart mouth would be a bloody mess. The smart ass backed off and appologised to the lady, and then Cliff straightened up his collar on his coat and walked calmly into the restaurant. We were stunned. Cliff was a doer.. he didn't think twice about if he could do it or not, he just did it. When confronted about that action we saw, he said, I didn't think about it or I would have talked myself out of it. That is the secret of life, your best times are on impulse and so are your successes. Surprise, impulse, and jack daniels.
Cliff always made time for me, he would come to my shows. We had coffee together, we drank together with my Granny. He took me out on the dog sled. He gave me a purbred siberian husky that I love to this day and have her ggggggg granddog at this present time. I could look out my window on the lake at any given day and see him mushing with the team. The last time I saw him, I was visiting my other grandmother. He heard I was in town, and he had guessed where to find me. He was in his late 80's then. He was still driving around and showed up at the old folks home where my grandmother lived. My grandmother was going in and out of demintia and sometimes knew me sometimes not. Cliff said.. not to let it get to me, cause she had it good.. he remembered every pain in the ass he ever met and he wishes he could forget em... and with a wink and a hug he got me and my other grandmother to smile that day. That was the last day I saw him alive. We have been out of touch. He was sharp as a whip the day he died. I remember you Cliff and I am sorry I could not hang out more over the past years.. but I did what you wanted, the show went on.As far as you knew, I was still on the road when you closed your eyes for the last time. The next time I play, I will do "Mom & Dads Waltz" just for you. I don't doubt that is is still your favorite. Dance with my granny for me.... and I'll see you at last call.

Should I or Shouldn't I

Should I or Shouldn’t I
I do that a lot. I will go shopping and put something in the cart and drive it all around the store, sometimes two or three times around the store and talk myself out of buying it.  I do this so often that even I recognize it now when it starts.  It is not just shopping.  Some people may call it reasoning, making decisions or just weighing things out.  Well, I have done it again.  Let’s hope I have not bit off more than I can chew.
I am a musician, my ear is good, I have the ability to tune guitars, banjo, violins, etc… with or without a machine tuner.  I can tune an instrument so that it is in tune with itself if not 440.  So with that in mind, I do use a man made tuner just because I don’t like things to be out of tune and when playing with others.. Well you know.  If you don’t know, stop reading this now.
Some people have a family heirloom that is passed down to members of the family, usually a broach, a framed picture or something that you can keep with no big major issues on storage… ahem.  Not my family.  Sure there are some little things but I got a rather large one.  A Cable Nelson Birdseye Maple Cabinet Grand, Chicago upright piano.  Many members of my family on my mother’s side remember seeing this piano at my Great Grandfathers house, they grew up with it.  My Aunt Jeanette learned on it and played it when she lived at home, many people thought of it as hers.  It was left in the house long after she grew up and moved on.  It however was not my Great Grandfathers unless you go on squatters rights.  This piano was given to my Grandmother Bernice by the Cable Nelson people in Chicago as a gift.  She told me this years ago, and when it was time to move things from Great Grandpa’s house my mother and I requested the piano.  It has real ivory and ebony on the keys; it is a big heavy beautiful piece of art in itself.  It is weathered it is so out of tune it is ridiculous.  I had it tuned once twenty years ago but as you all know it needs more care than that.  It was difficult to tune for the guy who did it because of age and it lived by a lake at one time… a piano tuner’s nightmare.  But hey it is my heirloom.  So I didn’t throw it out, didn’t leave it behind, where I keep my house, the piano goes there.  Moved it three times now and a few different places in the house.   Now it has been on my mind to repurpose it… have seen some wonderful things that they do with old pianos.   Make a headboard out of it, a piano bar to hold wine and libations. Lots of beautiful ideas that I could soooo live with.  However, that thought has been in the shopping cart of my mind for a few years now.  YEARS.  I finally figured out what I am going to do.
I am going to bring it back to life.  I am going to try.  I bought a piano tuning hammer and I have the mute’s and things that come in the kit. I have many tools at my disposal to do this task and I have the time and place to do it.  It may take weeks to months to get it even close to where it should be.  It has come this far with me, it is the least I can do to try and give it more time to be all it can be instead of gutted.  (It hurts to think of it like that).   Something classy about an old musical instrument that still plays beautifully.  I’m gonna give it a shot anyway and play doctor.  What have I got to lose… nothing at this point and talk about a learning curve.  Thanks to YouTube how to vids I have a starting point and hopefully a happy ending.  If I get really good at it, maybe I can help some other old abandoned pianos before they go to the bone yard of forgotten sounds.  I will give an update after my piano tuning hammer gets here.
Tune it or die.

I Can Smell Him In This Picture

I can smell the aroma of my Great Grandfather in this picture.  He does not always pop into my mind but when he does, it is brought on by a smell or a picture of yester years.  Yes, I was fortunate enough to have met my mother’s paternal Grandfather. He was already an old man when I met him.  He was headed back to fragile as I was growing out of it.  He smoked a pipe. His house had an abundance of pipe holders and I remember that being the main décor of design theme.  I remember the smell of his tobacco.   It was a sweet smell, not like a rank smelling cigar, but a pleasant sniff when you got a whiff of it in moderation. I automatically associate that smell with him.   The sound of an old typewriter, newspapers in a stack that had been read with some coffee stains on the corners where the cup had been placed.  He was 10 years old when the clock turned to 1900.  He lived at the end of an era that electronics had only begun to change the daily lives of us all.  He was loved by many yet spent the majority of his last years by himself. Most of the people he had spent his life with and shared experiences had long passed on with the exception of his own offspring.  Stories of the younger man before I met him float through my mind. There is no way to truly know someone when you meet them in the winter of their lives. We see a withering tree with falling leaves.  Time has covered up the spring buds, the summer storms and the autumn of contentment.  He has been gone for about 40 years now, so many things have changed. I do not believe he would like it here today.  He was not afraid of change, he was a man that welcomed new ideas.  This day and age is however… just too much.  I somehow get the feeling he would have been disappointed in how some things turned out.   For what it is worth Grandpa, I still have an old typewriter like the one in this picture and I keep it working because I like the sounds it makes. I have rocks glasses just like in the picture.  I store old letters from family and friends in old suitcases just like the one in the picture, I keep grounded with touchable things… just like in the picture.  I do not have an old working camera, but one thing they do make better now is image reproduction.  It is instant recall now, no waiting, no developing.  Who would have thought… You were happy with a radio. I can’t begin to tell you what is here now. You would have thought it was from a Dick Tracy cartoon coming to fruition and in a way it is.  Technology can be fun and wonderful, yet… I miss your way of life Grandpa.  The pure simplicity of it makes me homesick for a time that I was not even born into.  Your memories and your lifestyle may be gone, but the memory of you lives on.  Thank you for living long enough to be an influence to me, your grand children and your kids.  … Time to read the paper, it’s on line ummm yeah.. I gotta boot up first. Nothing to do with shoes and no that is a cd drive not a cup holder.

 Tune it or die.

Christmas Past

What used to be a wonderment joyful time of year has slowly changed for me.  It starts with the small things that become a reality or drop out of a celebration.  Loss of people and things have painted a new picture.  An overall sadness has crept into my holiday season, Christmas time is a happy time for little kids and yes they do make or break a Christmas.
When growing up we spent Christmas Eve at home with my grandparents from one or both sides there. We got to open up presents from each other and the family big boxes that were sent from the relatives that all exchanged presents.  There was no drawing of names when you are an only child, that was for school and later years when gifts became so expensive you could not buy for everyone without going into debt.  There was a time that you could make a kid happy¸ and dare I say several kids happy with $20…and that was all it took.  We had candy that was homemade that I got to help make, and lots of smells that take you right back to memory lane if you smell them again.   Christmas morning was for that Santa dude… I believed in him for a while… not long mind you, but it was magical for a short time, for the record I do not miss that aspect. We would spend Christmas day after a long long long journey (about an hour and a half away) to my mother’s Aunt Ruth’s house. There were more presents there and a big huge dinner.  New Years day was my father’s side of the family get together with more presents and another huge dinner at Grandma’s house, that later moved to my uncle’s house, then they rented a place to have it cause the family grew too large for the living rooms.  Those were the happy years of Christmas.  Grandma’s, Grandpa’s, parents, cousins and no worries in the world.   I held those happy times for years, probably more time than most people got in life.  Then one by one, things began to change.  People started to die, the ritual of where to go changed.  Married life incorporated another side of the family to be involved with, it adds but it takes away on the other end. For many years we had Christmas on the road. Depending on where we were, friends and family would come to us. It was a pleasant twist in a routine. Sometimes it would just be the band and or adopted friends that would have us over to share in their family Christmas. I loved those days to, it is always easier on the gypsy if you are traveling instead of the one being at home missing the travelers. The adult world of Christmas is way different than through the eyes of a child.  You have to MAKE dinner, you have to spend money, you are the organizer not just a present opener. Sure the season is the same, the roll has changed.  Things are more expensive, there are lots more people in the family, but they are distant, the drawing names that happened for a while, have stopped all together because nobody gathers the same way on the same day.   Christmas has turned into something totally different, it is adopted family who is closer now geographically and mentally to celebrate the days with.  It is a reason to get off work or get off of work early and race home to relax, or start cookin and watch the weather to see who can’t make it.  Don’t get me wrong, I love the Christmas’s and the gatherings we have matured into, but it is no longer the magical ones of my youth.  I see how it happened and I see when it happened. Bit by bit, memory by memory changed.
This year for Christmas will be a very difficult one. My mom died this year.  Her birthday is Christmas eve.  Last year she & my dad were not here cause of the weather, but we talked on the phone, disappointed but no it was not the end of the world… so I thought.  It was to be her last Christmas, her last birthday.  Looking back, I wish we would have spent it together.  One more part of Christmas that won’t happen anymore.  A melancholy has set in to the air. Can’t shake it off, I can pretend it is not there for a while but it doesn’t change anything.  I understand more than ever the sadness that so many people feel this time of year.  It is almost as if,  If you have never loved you won’t feel sad, if you have never felt a loss, you will have nothing to miss.  If you have sad feelings about things you have missed, you are a lucky person. Yes.. a lucky person.  You have had the memories and the events that shaped your present.  The never ending present that all those gone before us is… the memories they left us.  It is sad to think they won’t happen again, but they DID happen.   Can’t go back.  I know that is where the sadness comes from.

I am hoping the solution for not letting the sadness take over and the melancholy dominate, is to change once again what has been changing all along.  We adapt and take it elsewhere.  So with a heavy heart, Merry Christmas to all of you who are still breathing, all of you that get to watch the magic once again through your little ones.  Enjoy it while you can no matter how much it has changed.  If you don’t have plans, I suggest you plan or have something in mind for yourself or someone else.  Cheers to Christmas past & present for we do not know what the future holds.

The Couch

The Couch

Ok, I know many people are attached to things, inanimate objects, possession big or small, inherited, bought or acquired.  THE couch of all couches (to me) became mine.  I loved it instantly. Always wanted a pit group & it was finally something that we had saved for and were able to get.  Next to our mortgage it was the most expensive thing we bought.  The year was 1986, back then $1,200.00 was what it cost. That was $200.00 a section.   It was chocolate brown & the most lush, plush, rich looking & softest comfortable piece of furniture ever.  I could move it many ways, an adult play pen, a long couch, a love seat… you name it.   It has been with me all these years even though we were on the road a lot, when I came home it was a haven for drummers, guitar players, girl friends, relatives, extended family, friends of friends…. Need to crash?… we got this couch….
There was many hours of slumber from many people.  Fornication was had by many, popcorn, movies, snuggling with our pets in the latter years.  We lived on that couch with many people & animals.   After all we put it through, it still looks warm and inviting, it looks like….Home.  We put in wood floors instead of carpet. Because of that the pit group moved all over the place when it needs to stay in one spot.. Carpet make it ok.  Signs of wear have started at this point as well, so the plan was to move it into the studio as a secondary bed for guests if needed.  The new couch is also a brown sectional, darker and only three pieces. More modern, upgrades ya know.  I didn’t change the color, just the shape.   So the beloved first couch is moved to the Catnip Studio where of course the cats live.  The occasional dog, the guests of the studio, and it still has a life giving comfort and love back to whomever falls asleep on it.   More signs of wear.. L   the animal hair is a lot to contend with on a normal basis, but when you get it on your couch there is always more to do.  It then becomes a target for animals to use it for other things…….. ahem.  Once that starts, there is no stopping it.  Markings of ownership, they love the couch too, just a little too much.   I can wash cushions, I can’t wash frames.  The sides of two pieces are worn and creek a bit due to people sitting on the sides. The wear spots are not visible to the eye, but when you clean the couch you see the wear spots on the sides of the cushions.    I am writing this to talk myself into what needs to be done.  Selling it to someone else is out of the question.  I would not consider selling it for the same reasons I should not keep it.  I love this couch.  It is like an album of pictures full of memories.  When I sit on it, it hugs me.  However the strong smell of an old cat is not something I care to be pulled out of my memories by.
Dog beds cost anywhere from $40. To $80. ,Or more unless you are creative and make them yourself.  This old couch has life in it still.  As I take my razor to attempt to cannibalize it for repurposing, I can’t help but shed tears. I take good care of the things I have.  I hate to let go of things I love, it can come in many forms, people, things, animals, yes.. I am almost a hoarder but not quite.  When I do let go I feel a weight lifted in a positive way, a bit of freedom and a memory that will never leave me. I get to keep those.    I know I should do it and I will.  I will say goodbye to my old friend of comfort by taking it apart, saving the materials and repurposing the things I can wash and bleach.  It is large, so I will gain space.  It has taken me over a year to decide one way or the other to do this.  I had to push myself to do it. Now because of what I have done, (a love seat on the way)  it is a must that I tear it apart.   I will use those cushions for my 8 dogs.  They love the couch cushions that will fit under my bed for them at night… and it will be clean for them.  I will still have parts to remember it, but somehow I feel like a traitor to all the good times and comfort it has given me and my friends over the years. SO many of you who read this… know the couch of which I write of.  You have slept on it… errr whatever you did when I wasn’t lookin.
So with all due respect… goodbye my old couch.  I will never forget you. I will probably never forgive myself for tearing you apart.  I will go back and forth in my mind saying… maybe it wasn’t that bad.. maybe I jumped the gun.. maybe I should have could have would have…                                                      but no.   I know I need to do this.   I have added up the plus’s and the negatives. The plus’s of piecing it out way outnumber the reasons not to.
For all of you who have been one of the couch dwellers… say your goodbyes also.  I counted you all up once, then lost track of how many more.  Over 112 people have slept on this couch.  Rock & Roll history, IT BELONGS IN THE ROAD DOG MUSEUM I TELL YA !!!   Parting is sad sorrow.    Maybe now I can concentrate on other things instead of morning an inanimate object.  I’m silly like that.
I got a guest room now.  If that is full and you are a guest of mine, if you are short you can sleep in the studio.  If not… there is another couch in the living room… it is still pretty much a virgin, only a dozen people have slept on it … so far.    Cleaning out my clutter and my precious band memories.

Tune it or die.

Tis the Season

Tis  The Season

So far the best thing to make me smile has been something I got in the mail from my husband’s aunt who happens to be a nun in her mid 80’s.  She sends clippings of newspapers and happenings of relatives that we may not have read yet.  The first line of the little letter she wrote said.   “ I saw this used Christmas card and I just had to recycle it for you!”   I loved that.  Not that I want a bunch of recycled Christmas cards mind you.. but her thought and deed were so sweet. It made me think.

Tis the season where I always get into my personal evaluation of myself and take inventory on my actions.  Happens every year since I can remember. The thoughts of making things count more and getting a clue that not everything is perfect in the world.  Every year the list of self inventory changes for me. Oh yeah there are the never ending subject entries that stay on my list simply cause they should not be removed and since nobodies perfect they need to stay on the list to try to be the best you can.   The list has changed a bit of direction from a decade ago. I’m in a different place in life now.   I have found myself with a low tolerance to stupidity these days. I get more frustrated with apathy about life and quality of life from so many “human beings”.  Every year a person wakes up to a few more things in life.  Time does that to you and if you are lucky it is improvements to your vast knowledge of dealing with things.  I know there are many caring, loving people out there in this fucked up world.  Yes  Fucked up world.  Why swear? Cause when you see what is happening out there that we have minimal to no control over, it is totally fucked up. There is no other word that will work.  Needless deaths, wars, starvation, murders, illnesses, cruelty… the list goes on  and on.  These things have always been here with us… you think we would have learned something by now on how to change it for the better.  It made me think.

A man I respected very much once said to me  Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody.   (RIP Baste Fanebust).   That thinking has stayed with me since I heard it.  No matter what your passion in life is, there is a cause to devote your attention to it. A way to change your corner of the world to make it better somehow.   Reaching out only works if you know why you are doing it.  Not cause it looks good, not cause you think to impress someone, but because you care.

As many of you know, I have chosen to put my caring and making a difference to the animals without a voice.  So many ways, to give and help.  Trying to educate, trying to point out reason so people do the math and stop adding to the overpopulated situation.  That is a total other blog entry that is coming soon, but not for this one.   My point is, be it people or animals, they all need help. WE all need help. Just because I help animals more than I assist children does not mean I don’t care about them.  It is my choice to help where I feel I’m needed.  So for those of you who comment.. “what about the starving children”.   Well yeah. What about them!!! Get off your ass and make a difference if you are concerned about them. Stop trying to hinder the compassion for something that someone is trying to improve. Bringing up other desperate situations in accusation of priority??? Who you kidding. If your house needs cleaning it needs cleaning, start doing it. The thing is START and stop bitching about where people that are helping  start they’re journey.  Put your money where your mouth is.  If you don’t understand why people need to and should help take care of the animals on this earth who need it, then don’t bother those of us who do understand.  Compassion needs no justification.

Ahhh yes.. a bit snippy I am *sigh*.  I cannot speak for others, but I can speak for me.  In the coming year(s) I hope to help more to the causes I know and trust to be effected by my efforts in a positive way.    It is a big part of my thoughts and in my heart these days.  I live with many. I don’t exactly know how it all happened, it was gradual, but I know that my life is richer for it.  Not financially lol hell no.   Maybe I should have said rewarding instead of richer.

This year I plan to use my time a bit more wiser. Finish projects I have started or ideas I have had sitting there for a while. Little goals that I know I can reach on a weekly or monthly basis.  I plan to do more for the causes I feel so strongly about.  As much as I love technology and computer life I also need to get back to nature a bit more. Planting a garden this year reminded me of that.  In my own personal battle with GMO & trying to be healthy; this will be a year of awareness for me more than years in the past.   It is really not that difficult to say no to things that are bad for you, or don’t feel right, or are just simply wrong.

As far as the season… next year as well as this year, I made a change. I voiced it a bit in little posts here and there.  Now it will become my personal law. Concerning Christmas and the spirit of giving. I will no longer join the masses of buying cheap plastic crap that the world does not need for anyone.  I will give gifts of food or drink, things I make or repurpose myself, & gifts for my animals.    I will give the gift of standing up for No Kill Shelters & supporting them more than I have have before.   It makes me think… if everyone would give something to help the many causes out there that touch them, there would be a bit less stress in one corner of the world.  For me watching commercials on tv about shopping and the santa crap.. it drives me crazy and more often than  not makes me do the very opposite.  I won’t buy that shit anymore, not the hype, not the goods.   Kids at Christmas learn how to receive, not many learn how to give, perhaps it’s time to teach them that. Take them to a shelter to help brush the dogs… give time.  Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying kids shouldn’t get presents and all that goes with it, im saying don’t stop there… do the other half. Make the season about giving not about getting not about shopping.   Remember why before you buy.

I guess this is more of a Christmas rant.  It started out to be a declaration of my plans.  My intentions these day get side tracked even in a blog lol.  See.. that is why my time needs to be a focus this coming year.    With all that said,  I hope you all have a blessed Christmas and are allowed to be with the ones you love in one form or another.   Positive thoughts go out to all of you who have touched my life.

Tune it or die.
Want to help out? This is a great start.

The Night Gown

The Night Gown

Ok, it’s time to blog about it. If it comes to my dreams more than once I have to pay attention to it on a different level.  Four times now over the past few months for no reason at all that I can surmise my mind has been triggered to remember this piece of my past.

It was a soft silky satin material that clung to your body. It made you feel sexy even if you weren’t.  It was a light peach color with no sleeves. It hung to the floor on me shorter in front and tapered to longer in the back so it drug on the ground a little behind me.  It had raised threading on the front of it around each side of the low cut V neck line.  It was curvy even when a little girl put it on.  This was not my nightgown. It was in my grandmas “stuff “. I always felt sexy when wearing it and a little sad.  I used to think the sad was because I wanted it and it was not mine to have.  I was too little. It was too grownup.

I spent hours as a little girl playing in my grandma’s stuff.  She had an upstairs in both houses that she lived in while I knew her.  Each room was a hidden treasure chest of dress up clothes for a little girl. She had wardrobes, hampers, closets, and boxes full of hats, coats, & dresses.  My grandma used to be a seamstress in the depression years.  She made her 4 son’s suit jackets out of an older full length coat that was given to her.  She wore turbans before her time when she could not afford a proper hat. Because she was raised and lived in the depression, material was not easy to come by. Every little bit she could get she put to use.  She ended up hoarding many boxes of clothing and materials that she would never have time to use in her lifetime.  The start of this hoarding was a little girls play room…. Mine.

Most little girl’s dream of becoming a princess, I on the other hand wanted to be a sexy jazz singer with a long cigarette holder in a Mickey Spillane book.   I would stand on her coffee table in front of the mirror in her bedroom dressed in whatever combination I could find that would set the mood & sing loudly into a hairbrush for my microphone.  There was an old phonograph there with a few old 45’s. She didn’t have many records and I doubt she ever played them. She probably got them at a sale and they were stored away with the clothes.  I however played them many many many times over.  One of the records was  CRY by Johnny Ray  http://youtu.be/mFdYALD4Ygw  I sang this over and over in front of that mirror dressed in that night gown.

That night gown has been in my dreams.  I had completely forgotten about it. But yet here it is in my mind as real as it can be.  I can close my eyes and smell it.  Feel it.. I remember how smooth it was. I remember it not fitting as loose in later days as I grew more into it.  As an only child I pride myself on never being board in my life, I always figured out something to do.  Some may have called it a waste of time to play dress up in my grandma’s stuff.   I know it was not a waste of time.  I used many things back then, my imagination for one.  It wasn’t just given to me on a screen or keyboard to see someone else’s imagination.   All I had was mine.

I have no idea what that night gown has shown up in my mind again.  I wish I had it with me today.  It was not mine to keep.  Who knows what its fate ended up to be.   It was worn but not worn out.  Did it make the woman who owned it before feel sexy? Surely if she loved it as much as I did, she would not have given it away … It made me feel sexy way before I knew what sexy could mean.   In my adult life I have acquired many sexy pieces of clothing.   From backless to braless you name it… however not one of those pieces.. make me feel like that peach night gown did. Now it comes to visit me in my dreams.

Why has it returned to me in my thoughts? What could it possibly mean?  It is not something I can create over.. There is nothing like it that I have seen since.  It would simply not be the same. Yet here it is, over and over again. A piece of clothing from my childhood that was not even mine.  Maybe I don’t need to figure it out at all, just share the story with you.

A woman with matching peach lips wears this nightgown now in my dreams.  She is barefoot and walking down a hall as in a motel. She never goes into a room she just walks towards me.  She never reaches me but keeps walking.  She looks sad.  The dream is not frightening it is actually comforting in a weird way.  That is the night gown I used to play in.  Maybe it’s hers again, the woman who owned it.  Maybe she wears that night gown again in another space and time.. And I am just one of those people that she can show in a dream because of the nightgown.  I doubt I will ever know.

Things That Matter

THINGS THAT MATTER

When I was a kid, my grandma Anna had newspapers around.  Local news papers, trade papers, entertainment papers & magazines.  Two of these were the STAR and The National Enquirer.
The difference in the media of the time was evident. As a kid my eyes turned to the flippant gossip rag of fashion and drama.  It has been decades since I have had any interest in those tabloids.  I prefer to think of it as mentally stimulating my brain with better subject matter..  MATTER!!! THAT’S IT.  Matter.. what matters. What really matters.   Live and death over he said she said.   People are so drawn to gossip and drama that it is sickenin to me at this point in life.  So many people get stressed out or build a life on other peoples dramas.  Social media is a great tool. We hear about things faster than the news can report, things that really matter get addressed so that we can use our brains to weed out the Star & Enquirer news.   More and more I find that the social media is dwelling on the he said she said topics, the dirty laundry of personal lives… and some asshole always has to antagonize or argue or complain about anything represented.   We have Theater, movies, music..  all of these things are outlets for our creativity and craving for drama.. its DRAMA in the best form..  actors, musicians…. Performers to let you imagine for a song or an hour… to escape your own stress or just laugh or enjoy.
The older I get… the more I roll my eyes at some of the lets call it abuse of social media…  I enjoy the arts, I enjoy keepin in touch with people I know or people I have things in common with.  I am finding myself getting weary of the STAR and Enquirer type news that keeps hitting views on FaceBook,  Things I did not sign up for… things that they think im interested in  lol.    When you feel you have to look on snopes for everything to see if it is full of shit or not…  once in a while you have to rant.    I am not saying I expect a sober, snobbish intellectual only dry no humor social network .. not at all.’m just tired of the things that try to lead us all into sheep territory.  Tired of the the media talking about Mylie or the Kardashians like it was actually important when lives are being lost.   The coverage is ridiculous.. as if they want the majority to be distracted from what is going on.  Am I paranoid.. maybe. Maybe not.
I did not subscribe to the Star or Enquirer on line. I plan to continue to avoid this crap.
I made myself a deal.  Time permitting, with every piece of shit drama that crosses my path.. I will purify my brain with some actual things that Matter on any scale & try to do something productive about it or for it.     Don’t get me wrong.. I love social media & everyone needs a drama outlet.. I just wish some of the participants were more conscious of things that matter.
